About "Hockey is for Everyone™":
Hockey is for Everyone (HIFE) initiative provides unique programming to nonprofit youth hockey organizations throughout North America that give at-risk youth the opportunity to be exposed to hockey regardless of economic background. HIFE leverages hockey as a catalyst to build character and develop life skills through the lessons learned on and off the ice.
Hockey is for Everyone™ was established as a way for the hockey community to come together to provide opportunities for boys & girls of all backgrounds to play hockey.
Hockey is for Everyone™ is a component of The Biggest Assist Happens Off The Ice®, the National Hockey League’s® and National Hockey League Players’ Association’s social responsibility program that builds on hockey’s long-standing tradition of addressing important social issues in North America and around the world.
Hockey is for Everyone™ chief ambassador is Willie O’Ree, who currently serves as the NHL’s Director of Youth Development, a post he has held since January 1998. On January 18, 1958, playing for the Boston Bruins against the Montreal Canadiens, O’Ree became the first black person to play in the NHL - an extraordinary event that paved the way for future players of diverse ethnic and economic backgrounds.
