The National Hockey League (NHL) is the pinnacle of professional ice hockey, captivating fans across North America and beyond. With 32 teams (25 in the United States and 7 in Canada), the league is home to the world’s best hockey players, representing 17 nations as of the 2023–24 season.

At the heart of the NHL lies the Stanley Cup, the oldest professional sports trophy in North America and the ultimate prize for hockey greatness.

Foundation

Founded in Montreal in 1917, the NHL emerged as the successor to the National Hockey Association. Initially composed of just four Canadian teams, the league expanded into the United States in 1924 with the Boston Bruins. By 1967, the NHL transitioned from its historic “Original Six” era to a new wave of expansion, ultimately growing to today’s robust roster of teams. In 2024, the league maintained its dynamic presence by relocating the Arizona Coyotes to Salt Lake City.

Seasons

The NHL regular season runs from October to April, featuring 82 action-packed games per team. The excitement peaks in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, a high-stakes, four-round tournament that crowns the league champion in June. Throughout its history, the NHL has showcased legendary teams like the Montreal Canadiens, who boast 25 championships, and current champions, the Florida Panthers.
